3.1  TASTE and TASTY:    ( Tongue )

Q1.  When does your mouth water? List five things you like to eat and describe their taste.
Ans:  My mouth waters when I see some tempting food in front of me.

Things I like to eat are :
Sugar  because it is sweet.
Tomato sauce because it is spicy.
Ice cream because it is sweet.
Lemon because it is sour.
Tamarind because it is sour

Q2.  Do you like only one kind of taste or different ones? Why?
Ans:  I like different tastes as one taste all the time makes the food less tasty to me.

Q3.  Do you think we can make out the taste of lemon with just few drops of its juice?
Ans:  Yes we can make out its sour taste .

Q4.  How did Jhumpa make out the fried fish? What things can be guessed only by their smell without seeing or tasting them?
Ans:  Jhumpa made out the fried fish by its smell. The following things can be guessed by their smell only.
Pepper  by its smell : Hot chapatti  : orange : dry fish :  garlic .

Q5.  Why do you sometimes hold your nose while taking medicine?
Ans:  Holding the nose takes the smell away and we can drink the medicine fast.

Q1.  How did it taste? What was the food item?
Ans:  The food item was kheer . It was sweet.

Q2.  On which part of the tongue could you get the most taste —in front, at the back, on the left or the right side of the tongue?
Ans:  I could get the most taste in the front of the tongue.

Q3.  Which taste could be made out on which part of the tongue?
Ans:
Sweet  – in front of the tongue.
Sour    – at the sides of the tongue.
Bitter  – at the back of the tongue.

Q4.  Put some things to eat under the tongue, on the lips, on the roof of the mouth. Did you get any taste there?
Ans:  No taste could be felt under the tongue, on the lips, on the roof of the mouth.

Q5.  Put sugar in front of your tongue .Could you taste anything? Why did this happen?
Ans:  I could get the sense of sweetness because sugar mixed with the saliva on the tongue.

Q6.  Stand in front of a mirror, how does the tongue look?
Ans:  The tongue looks flat with tiny bumps on the surface.

Describe the taste of the following:

Tomato           – tangy

Onion              – pungent

Saunf               – tingling

Garlic              – spicy.

3.2  HUNGRY;( Start Chewing )

Put boiled rice in your mouth, chew and then swallow.
Q1.  Did the taste change after you chewed it?
Ans:  Yes the taste changed from sweet to paste.

Q2.  Take boiled rice and chew it twenty to twenty five time .
Ans:  The boiled rice became a sweet paste and was easy to swallow.

Q3.  Was there any change in the taste after chewing so many times?
Ans:  The taste was more sweeter and  watery.

Discuss and write :

Q1.  People tell you to eat slowly and to chew well. Why do they say this?
Ans:  Eating slowly and chewing well helps the food to be digested easily.

Q2.  State the changes while eating a hard guava . What does the saliva do in our mouth?
Ans:  The guava breaks up into small pieces after biting it and then it becomes a sweet paste while chewing it. It mixes with saliva and makes it easy to swallow.

Q3.  How do you feel when you are hungry?
Ans:  Feel irritated and restless.

Q4.  How do you come to know that you are hungry?
Ans:  The saliva starts coming out faster and the stomach starts growling.

Q5.  Think what would happen if you do not eat for two days?
Ans:  I shall have no energy to work or play. I shall feel tired fast.

Q6.  Would you be able to manage without drinking water for two days? Where do you think the water that we drink goes?
Ans:  No we cannot manage without water for two days. Water is needed for our body. The water that we drink goes to our body for digestion and keeps us active.

 3.3  GLUCOSE: ( A Health Food )

Q 1.  Nita’s father gave her a solution of sugar and salt? Why did he give her the solution?
Ans:  This solution is given to those who are vomiting and having loose motions.

Q 2.  Have you heard the word glucose or seen it written anywhere? Where?
Ans:  Glucose is given to sportsperson before their race.

Q 3.  Have you ever tasted glucose? How does it taste?
Ans:  Yes I have tasted it. It tastes sweet.

Q 4.  Have you or anyone in the family been given a glucose drip? When and Why?
Ans:  My sister was given a glucose drip when she fainted on the road while shopping. This was given to give her more strength.

Q 5.  Nitu’s teacher used to tell the girls to have glucose while playing hockey. Why?
Ans:  Glucose would give the girls extra strength to play better.

Q 6.  What you can see by looking at the picture ?

Ans: Looking at the picture I can see the glucose drip bottle is hung up and with a needle pierced in her wrist. The glucose goes into her body drop by drop.

3.4   Story – A stomach with a window.  ( Summary of the story )                      

Martin was wounded. Dr. Beaumont found out that he had a hole in his stomach. Through this he could see the whole stomach. He conducted an experiment on Martin. He took some digestive juice from the stomach by a tube and kept it in a glass. He kept this juice with fishes. After six hours the fish had dissolved. In Martins stomach it took less time. So digestion is faster in the stomach than outside . Our stomach churns the food but if the food is not digested properly then the stomach becomes acidic.

3.5    Good food and good health :

Q 1.  Why do you think Rashmi could eat only one roti in the whole day?
Ans:  Rashmi could eat only one roti in the whole day as she was sickly and had no strength.

Q 2.  Do you think Kailash would like games and sports?
Ans:  No Kailash would not like games and sports because he was fat and flabby.he had pain in his legs.

Q 3.  What do you understand by ‘proper food’?
Ans:  Proper food means all nutrients like proteins vitamins iron calcium should be present in the food.

Q 4.  Why do you think that the food of Rashmi and Kailash was not proper?
Ans:  Their food was not proper because they were not growing like any other children. Rashmi was thin and Kailash was fat.

Find out :
Grandparents ate well cooked rice roti with vegetables chicken fish. They worked manually. Our diet consists of fast food like noodles, pizza fried rice tandoori chicken. These foods are not good for our health.

Q 1.  Do you know any child who does not get enough to eat the whole day? What are the reasons for this?
Ans:  My servants children are very weak. They eat only rice and dal daily. They are poor and cannot afford good food.

Q 2.  Have you ever seen a godown where a lot of grains has been stored?
Ans:  No I have not seen one.

What we have learnt :

Q 1.  Why can you not taste food properly when you have a cold?
Ans:  When I have cold my sense of smell is not there hence I  cannot taste food properly.

Q 2.  Digestion begins in the mouth. How would you explain this.
Ans:  We put food in the mouth, chew properly and then swallow it. It then goes to the stomach.
