You walked softly past a sleeping dog, its ears shot up at once.
You dropped something sweet and within minutes many ants collected around it.

i) Why did this happen?
Ans: This happened because animals can hear, smell, taste, see and feel.

Ans:  A single ant came in first.

Ans:  The ants started taking the sugar one by one.

Ans:  From there they head towards their houses.

Ans:  Yes, they were moving in a line.

Ans:  The ants behaved that way because they were lost the smell left by the ants before them.

Ans:  The mosquito can find me by the smell of my body. They also find me by the smell of the sole of my feet and the heat of my body.

Ans:  Dogs can make out if another dog has come into their area by the smell of its urine or potty.

Q 3.  In what ways do human beings make use of the special sense of smell of the dogs?
Ans:  Humans use the dogs special sense of smell to catch criminals, to detect bombs and to find smuggled goods.

Ans:  The aroma of good food cooking makes me hungry and the foul smell of dirt nearby makes me go far away from there.

Ans:  The sari smell of the cooking in the kitchen is my mummy’s. The starched shirt smell belongs to my daddy.

Q 1.  Sushila covered her nose when she cleaned Deepak’s nappy, but not when she cleaned her own daughter. Why do you this she did this?
Ans:  Sushila got used to her baby’s nappy changing and the smell was known to her but Deepak was new to her for nappy changing so she covered her face because of the smell.

Q 2.  How do you feel when you walk near a heap of garbage? Think of the children who spend the whole day picking things from suck garbage.
Ans:  When I walk near a heap of garbage I get the stench of dirt, garbage and rotten food.

Q 3.  Is a smell ‘good’ of ‘bad’ for everyone in the same way? Or does it depend on how each one feels about it?
Ans:  Smell is good or bad depending on the smell the things give out.

1.3  LOOK and LOOK (Eyes):

1.  Owl has eyes in front of its head.
2.  Some birds which have eyes on either side of the head are parrots, pigeons, crow, eagle. Their eyes size is bigger than their heads.
3.  Birds who have eyes on either side of their head can focus on two different  things at a time.
4.  Birds turn their heads to see around as their eyes are fixed and cannot move.

Look with one or two eyes :

Close your right eye and tell your friend to stand to your right at some distance and ask him to do some actions.
Q 1.  Could you see your friend’s action without moving your neck?
Ans:  No, I could not see my friend’s action without moving my neck.

Q 2.  Now look at your friend’s action with both your eyes open without moving your neck.
Ans:  With both eyes open I could see clearly.

Q 3.  What was the difference on looking with one or both eyes?
Ans:  With one eye open we have to turn our head.

Q 4.  Toss a small coin and try to catch it with one eye closed and with both eyes open.
Ans:  It was easier to catch with both eyes open but with one eye open we are not sure in which direction it will fall.

Q 5.  Imagine how it would be to have your eyes in place of yours ears? What would you be able to do then, which you cannot do now?
Ans:  If the eyes were in place of our ears, we would be able to see what is on the right and what is on the left but we will not be able to see the front.

Do animals see colours :

Animals who are awake in the daytime can see some colours.
Animals who are awake in the night can see things only in black and white colours.
Ten animals whose ears can be seen.
Dog, cat, elephant, cow, buffalo, rabbit,  lion,  tiger,  horse, monkey.
Some animals whose ears are bigger than our ears.
Lion, elephant,  fox,  hound,  horse.

1.4  HEAR and HEAR (Ears):

i) You can hear your own voice by putting your hands over your ears.
ii) You can hear clearly if we put our ears to the place where the sound is coming from.
iii) Snakes do not have external ears, they only feel the vibration on the ground.

Q 1.  How does a langur warn others of dangers.
Ans:  The langur makes a special warning call high on a tree.

Q 2.  How do birds give alarm calls to warn about danger.
Ans:  Birds also give alarm calls to wan about the danger. Some birds even have different sounds for different kinds of dangers. For example, there is different warning call if the enemy is coming from the sky or if the enemy is on the ground.
Some animals behave in a different way when earthquakes and storm is about to come. Dolphins make different sounds to each other.

Ans:  Monkeys make a chattering sound.  Yes I can understand the sound of some animals like the monkeys chattering sound, the dogs barking sound, the cat meowing sound etc.

Q 2.  Do some animals understand your language. Which ones?
Ans:  Elephants, dogs, dolphins understand our language.

i) Sleep walking :
Some animals go into a long deep sleep in certain seasons.
We do not see any lizards during the cold season in the house because they sleep at that time.

ii) Sloth :
Looks like a bear. It spends twelve hours sleeping hanging from a tree branch. It eats leaves of the same tree. It lives for forty years. It moves around only eight trees. Once a week it comes down to relieve itself.

Cow                 =  four hours

Python            =  eighteen hours

Giraffe            =  two hours

Cat                   =  twelve hours.

1.6  THE TIGER:
A tiger can see six times better at night.
Its whiskers helps it to move in the dark as they are sensitive.
Its ears can move in different directions and its hearing is very sharp.
They make different sounds for different purpose
When angry they roar which can be heard upto five kms.
They mark their area with their urine and can smell other tigers urine to know that they are there.

Q1.  What do you think are some of the dangers to tigers in the jungle?
Ans:  Tigers are in danger of hunters and poachers who kill them for their skins. Also destruction of forests is another danger

Q2.  Can human beings also be a threat to animals? How?
Ans:  Yes, human beings are a threat to animals because they kill them for their skin and also for their meat.

Q3.  Why are many animals killed? Give some examples.
Ans:  Many animals are killed and their parts are sold and people make a lot of money.
Eg: Elephants are killed for their tusks, rhinoceros for its horn, tigers, crocodiles and snakes for their skins. Musk deer are killed just to make a little scent from its musk.

Q4.  Who are poachers.
Ans:  People who kill animals are called hunters and poachers. Forests are made protected area by the government to  protect wild life.
