Ans. Soapy would go to eat at a restaurant and he would then tell he did not have money. They would soon call a cop who would arrest him. But as soon as he wanted to enter the restaurant the waiter blocked his entry. Thus his first plan did not work.

  1. “But the cop’s mind would not consider Soapy” What did the cop not consider and why?

Ans. The cop did not believe that Soapy had broken the window panes. That was because no such criminal would stop and talk to a cop instead he would have run away on seeing the cop.

  1. “We have orders to let them shout,” What is the policeman referring to?

Ans. The policeman is referring to the bad crowd of shouting college students and he had orders not to arrest them for this wrong behavior.

Ans.  When he saw the home where he had spent his childhood suddenly changed his outlook. The old memories of his mother and the sweet music revived his love to lead a good life. He decided to work and become somebody in life.

  1. Suppose no cop came at the end. What would Soapy’s life be like through the winter?

Ans.  If Soapy had not been arrested by the cops and sent to prison, he would have started a new life. He could have taken up some job and lived a normal life. But he would have to face the icy cold winds in winter.

  1. Retell an episode in the story which is a good example of irony in a situation.

Ans. Soapy was very eager to go to prison as he wanted to stay there for the next three months of winter.  He made a lot of attempts to get arrested. But nothing worked. So in the end he decided to live a honest and decent life, but he was arrested. This is a good example of irony.
