MEANINGS/DEFINITIONS

  • Metal
    Metals are placed on the left-hand side of the periodic table. Metal lose electrons to become positive ions     E.g., Na+ , Mg2+
    Metals react with water to form metals oxides or metal hydroxide and H2 gas is released.
  • Non – Metals
    Non – metals are placed on the right-hand side of the periodic tables. Non – metals gain electrons to become negative ions E.g., CL, O2-
    Non – metals do not react with water or steam to evolve hydrogen gas.
  • Ionic solids
    Ionic solics are hard due to strong force of attraction and are generally brittle.
    Metals when left open in air gets corroded. Both air and water and required for iron nails to rust.
